Food Security/Justice

Food Security in Gadsden County 29% of our children are food insecure and 55% are eligible for federal nutrition programs.  Quincy sits 25  miles northwest of Tallahassee, Florida, the capital of Florida with a  population of 7,600 with a median household income of $35,500. The largest ethnic group is African American (64%). Quincy's agricultural economy is based on farming tomatoes, tobacco, mushrooms, soybeans, and other crops. About 36.7% of Quincy’s population lives in poverty, more than three times the national average of 11.8%. (Census, 2019).  Furthermore, nearby Gadsden County ranks highest for food insecurity of the state's 67 counties in Florida. Feeding America estimates 75% of Gadsden County residents are income-eligible for nutrition programs. Over 11,000 people are food insecure in Gadsden  County.

NFEDC Farm

NFEDC Farm has partnered with FAMU to plant fresh vegetables. The farm will focus on developing Community Raised Gardens and a Greenhouse for growing fresh fruits and vegetables. 

Big Bend Cooperative is a group of local farmers partnering to increase the local farmer's income and brings fresh fruits and vegetables to the local consumers.
